Chicago Fire Department Pipes & Drums

A Little History of the Chicago Fire Dept Pipes & Drums

Organized & Established in May of 2007

The Chicago Fire Department Pipes & Drums was established with three virtues in mind; Pride, Honor & Tradition.  We set out to create an organization that honors our fire depatment's haritage, upholds the traditions of the Fire Service, as well as aims for the high performance standard of a world class Pipe & Drum Band.

The CFD P&D is comprised of members of the Chicago Fire Department and their immediate family.  Each & every decision made by the band is done while keeping in mind our core values; Focus on the band, and more importantly, put the focus on the department we represent.

Band members realize that involvement in the band is an extension of their calling in the fire service.  For our civilian members, it is often a way to honor a loved one and give back to the CFD family that has been there since they were born.

Although not an official entity of the Chicago Fire Dept, the band has received strong support from the CFD, as well as from the Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2.

Some Facts about the CFD P&D

Band Tarten: The tarten we wear on our kilt is called the Cunningham Modern.  It was choosen for it's color scheme which includes red & black, traditional colors of the CFD, and blue representing EMS.  The tarten was voted on by the Founding Members from a selection of 20 diffent tartens.

Band Logo/Patch: The band logo is used as our patch, as well as our bass drum head art, letterhead, etc.  It was created by piper/bass drummer Marty Gatton, who is a founding member of the band (he has served the band as President, Band Mamager and Quartermaster).  The logo is a simple statement of who we are (Chicago Fire Dept Pipes & Drums), our calling to the fire service, the Chicago Fire dept which we represent, and the city of Chicago where we live.

Band Chest & Cap Badge: The band badge was designed by former member Doug Crowly (Doug was a piper and also served as our President).  It resembles the original badges of the Orginized CFD with our band logo incorporated.  Consequently, the shape is also the basis of the logo of our own Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2.
